Hey everyone!!!
This is my first blog, so I will try my hardest to update and keep everyone informed on my travels. So if you are reading this right now, you already know I am going to be in Rwanda this semester. Rwanda is in eastern Africa. It is landlocked by the Congo, Uganda, and Tanzania. Rwanda is a small country, about the size of Maryland. Although the country is small landwise it is a country large in beauty. Rwanda is called the land of a Thousand Hills, so you can picture that Rwanda has many mountains.
Rwanda is a considered a third world nation. The Gross Domestic Product per capita of the country is 1,100. 90% of the workforce is dedicated to Agriculture. Although it is a beautiful country it has seen a lot of suffering. In 1994, between April and June 800,000 people were killed in the Rwandan genocide. The genocide was to rid the country of the Tutsi population who was currently in charge, as a result many people died. If you want to learn more about the genocide and the country look at these websites: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/1288230.stm and https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/rw.html
My journey to Rwanda is through the study abroad program Go-Ed. The purpose of this program is to learn about peacekeeping and reconciliation. By going into Rwanda we are going to learn about the culture and the history. I am going into this country with an open mind, ready to learn and experience a new life. I will keep everyone updated on my journey, so feel free to tune in.
Peace and Love,
Rachel
